Banding Labels

A leading producer in the food industry was looking for a sustainable packaging solution for their metal tins. With the desire to work more eco-friendly and ensure product safety, we developed an innovative banderol that meets their specific requirements.

Hellema

Hellema is a leading Dutch producer of a wide range of cookies and speculaas paste. The company supplies its products to various retailers worldwide, with a strong focus on quality and innovation in packaging solutions. Thanks to their global presence, Hellema has built a reliable reputation in the food industry.

Packaging Challenge

Hellema faced a challenge with the packaging of three different sizes of metal tins. Their current shrink wrap packaging method had several drawbacks: customers in locations like Schiphol would open the packaging, leading to losses from shrinkage and write-offs of opened products. Hellema wanted to switch to a more environmentally friendly alternative and adjust the packaging so that the tins could no longer be opened without visible damage. Additionally, they were looking for a solution to stack the tins in a multi-pack of three, allowing them to sell the tins as a bundle.

Approach Optimum Group™ Max Aarts

After an intensive collaboration with Hellema, we provided an innovative packaging solution in the form of a 48mm wide banderol made of white BOPP 50/20 (transparent laminate). This material is ideal for metal tins as it is strong enough to prevent customers from tearing the packaging open. Furthermore, the use of the banderol contributes to environmental friendliness, as shrink wrap is no longer needed.

The process began with tests at Bandall to check if the tins were suitable for a banderol. After successful tests, drawings were made and final artwork was delivered. We worked closely with Rask, the company that handles the artwork for Hellema, and advised using a gold PMS color instead of full-color, resulting in a more aesthetically pleasing final product.

Throughout this process, the collaboration with Hellema was very intensive and constructive. Their project manager and project leader took the lead, with material advice from Max Aarts. The first banderols were recently produced and successfully applied to the tins by Dokwurk in Dokkum.

End result

The final product meets all of Hellema's requirements: it ensures the tins remain well-sealed, supports their sustainability goals, and offers the possibility of selling the tins as a multi-pack. The use of the banderol instead of shrink wrap makes the packaging not only more sustainable but also safer against unwanted opening. Although the sale of the packaged products had not yet started at the time of writing, it is expected to begin soon, with the new packaging method likely contributing to an increase in sales.

Hellema is very satisfied with the chosen solution and looks forward to bringing this packaging solution to the market in the near future.
